The official first day of fall, otherwise known as the autumnal equinox, is this weekend in the Northern Hemisphere. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, it is one of only two days, the other being the vernal equinox, when the sun is directly above the Equator, essentially dividing night and day into equal portions.

Although residents still have a ways to go before the warm weather fades, it's always exciting to know when summer ends and fall begins.

There’s a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight into early Sunday morning, especially around 3 to 5 a.m., the weather service says. The first day of autumn will have a high temperature almost 10 degrees lower than Saturday, forecasters say.
