The Fort Worth police officer arrested Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon says the driver he shot multiple times was preparing to run him over and he was afraid for his safety.

William Martin’s arrest comes after Fort Worth residents demanded that he be held accountable for his actions, saying the shooting is part of a pattern of “aggressive behavior.”

The officer, who has been with the Fort Worth PD for 19 years, was off duty on Sept. 3 when he shot a man who he claimed was trying to ram him with his vehicle after a hit-and-run.

A man was shot and killed after leading officers on a chase from New York City to Long Island, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.
